The opening of the lesson

Why it matters

Before any cryptography, a terminal reads data from the card and has to judge it:

  • Is the card number plausible?
  • Has the card expired?
  • Does it have a chip that should be used instead?
  • Is a PIN required?

The answers come from the PAN, the expiry date and the service code.
