Why it matters
A handful of short codes tell every system what a message is and how a transaction ended:
- the message type;
- how the card was read;
- why a transaction was declined;
- what kind of merchant it is;
- which currency.
Testers read them in every log; developers map them to screen messages, retries and reports.
