Why it matters
Almost every card authorisation travels as an ISO 8583 message at some point between the terminal and the issuer:
- terminal ↔ acquirer host;
- acquirer ↔ network;
- network ↔ issuer processor.
Each link has its own dialect, but the structure is always the same. Reading a raw message quickly is the most useful skill a payment developer or tester can have.
