The opening of the lesson

Why it matters

A hardware security module is where a payment system's secrets live and where every sensitive operation happens:

  • PIN translation and verification;
  • MAC generation and checking;
  • cryptogram verification;
  • key import and export.

Host developers write code that calls it; testers read its error codes; auditors check its configuration. If a key or a PIN ever appears in clear outside an HSM, something is wrong.
