What this module covers
You will be able to
- Plan positive and negative tests per component
- Use test cards, test keys and simulators
- Build known-answer tests
- Prepare regression for certification
The lesson
- Why it matters
- The concept
- Step by step: building a known-answer test
- A test plan skeleton
- In the real world
- Common mistakes
- What to test
In the module
- The lesson, with diagrams, common mistakes and what to test
- A worked example you can change: A known-answer test from a vector
- Practice: 2 kinds of generated exercise, each with a step-by-step solution
- A quiz of 8 questions
Key terms
- Boundary test
- A test at the edge of a rule: the largest amount, the shortest PIN, the counter's last value, a field at its maximum length.
- Brand certification
- Testing that a terminal or host meets a network's rules, with the network's test cases and tools, before it goes live.
- Host simulator
- A program that plays the host or network, answering requests with chosen response codes, delays and errors.
- Known-answer test
- A test that runs fixed inputs and compares the output with a known correct value, such as the vectors on the Test Vectors page.
- Negative test
- A test with wrong or unexpected inputs, such as a bad PIN, a corrupted MAC or a missing field, that checks the system fails safely.
- Regression test
- Re-running existing tests after a change to check nothing that worked is broken.
- Test card
- A card or card profile made for testing, with test keys and known values, never a real customer card.
